Media Arts Academy and Merze Tate Travel Club
Who in the World is Merze Tate Merze Tate descended from pioneer farm families who migrated to Michigan during the Homestead Act. The former Underground Railroad conductors sought a life not restricted by color. From becoming the first African American graduate of Oxford University in 1935 to reserving a seat on Pan American Air’s first flight to outer space. Tate lived a life without limits. The Merze Tate Travel Club and Media Arts Academy, both youth programs in Kalamazoo, teamed up to create the documentary “Who in the World is Merze Tate ”. The documentary includes interviews from Tate family members, educators and historians of Western Michigan, Howard and Oxford universities.
